This video, hosted on YouTube, highlights the vibrant, active organization the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is today.

Welcome!

We are delighted that you are visiting the website for the Archibald D. Murphey Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR). Our chapter is located in Murphy, North Carolina. Most of our local members live in one of the three western–most counties in the state: Cherokee, Clay, and Graham counties. The towns of Murphy, Andrews, Hayesville, and Robbinsville, nestled in the Smoky Mountains, are lovely locations for our monthly meetings. We meet as a chapter on the second Wednesday of every month from September through May. Please contact us (see button at the top left) for further information concerning chapter meeting locations and times. We have approximately 35 members and welcome prospective members. We enjoy our patriotic and educational activities and are proud to make a difference in the lives of our community, state, and country.

Our chapter, organized in 1964, is named in honor of Archibald D. Murphey, an educator, lawyer, agriculturist, politician, jurist, and legislator. He was born in 1777 in Caswell County and graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1799. In 1816, as a member of the education committee of the North Carolina Legislature, Murphey wrote a report declaring that the state’s strength lay in its people and that the state should offer the means to become enlightened without distinction of class. He argued that primary and secondary schools should be established leading directly to the University. He has been called the “Father of Public Education in North Carolina.” He stood for many of the principles held dear by DAR. We are proud to use his name.

Please feel free to explore this website. You will find out more about our projects, activities, programs, and patriots.
