 History

The Daniel Boone Chapter NSDAR in Boone, NC was organized in 16 October 1966 when a group of women met to honor their Revolutionary Ancestors by forming a chapter of the NSDAR: whose objectives are Historical Preservation, Education and Patriotic Endeavor. We were organized with nineteen charter members in October, 1966 under the local leadership of Mrs. Hadley Wilson. Since our Chapter was organized between October 1965 and October 1966, we were honored to be a Diamond Jubilee Chapter, celebrating the Seventy-fifth Anniversary of the founding of the NSDAR. The name was chosen to honor Daniel Boone, the early explorer and leader.

Activities

Our Daniel Boone Chapter meetings are held at 12:00 Noon on the second Tuesday of the months August through December and March through June. We annually participate in Constitution Week, Service to Veterans, College ROTC, DAR Good Citizen and other programs of NSDAR and NCSDAR.

Location

Boone, home of Appalachian State University, is found in northwestern North Carolina, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is the county seat of present day Watauga County, NC, which was formed 27 JAN 1849 from Ashe, Wilkes, Caldwell and Yancey Counties. On the 23 FEB 1911 Avery County was formed from parts of Watauga, Caldwell and Mitchell Counties, thus reducing the size of these counties.

Information

The public records for our area during the American Revolution are found in the following counties: Burke, Rowan, Surry, Wilkes, and Washington District, NC.  In 1796 the State of Tennessee was formed and Washington District, NC became Washington County, TN. The dividing line was moved to the Stone Mountains; the Western area became Tennessee and the Eastern area was added to Wilkes County, NC. On the 18 NOV 1799 Ashe County, NC was formed from part of Wilkes County with Jefferson as the county seat.

Any woman is eligible for membership who is no less than eighteen years of age and can prove lineal, blood line descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. She must provide documentation for each statement of birth, marriage, and death.

Admission to membership in the NSDAR is either by invitation through a Chapter in your State Organization (or Unit Overseas). No Chapter may discriminate against an applicant on the basis of race or creed.
