General Robert Irwin Chapter, NSDAR

The General Robert Irwin Chapter was officially organized November 10, 1962, at the home of Mrs. R. E. McDowell on York Road, the home site of Jane Parks McDowell, a Revolutionary War heroine.

Pineville, North Carolina

Pineville is a small town of over 3,500 people. Close to Charlotte, North Carolina, Pineville is well known for antique shops lining Main Street. Pineville is the birthplace of James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States.

Organization

    General Irwin, a signer of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was with General Thomas Sumter at Rocky Mount and Hanging Rock. General Robert Irwin's regiment led the revolutionary assalt at Hanging Rock.
     His regiment under General Griffith Rutherford was part of an expedition to subdue a band of Cherokee Indians rampaging and murdering frontier settlers.
     Irwin served in the North Carolina General Assembly for 12 years and was an elder for 20 years in the Steele Creek Presbyterian Church.

Membership

Any woman is eligible for membership who is no less than eighteen years of age and can prove lineal, blood line descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. She must provide documentation for each statement of birth, marriage, and death.

Admission to membership in the NSDAR is either by invitation through a Chapter in your State Organization or Unit Overseas. No Chapter may discriminate against an applicant on the basis of race or creed.
