Chapter Activities

To cherish, maintain, and extend the institutions of American freedom, to foster true patriotism and love of country, and to aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty.

Meetings

Hugh Rogers Chapter meets the third Saturday of each month, September through May.

Community Service

The Hugh Rogers Community Service Awards Committee recognizes worthy individuals in our community for outstanding unpaid voluntary achievements in cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic, historical, citizenship, or environmental conservation endeavors.

Constitution Week/Education

The tradition of celebrating Constitution Week was started many years ago by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. Our chapter places beautiful displays for Constitution Week in local businesses, schools, and libraries.

DAR Good Citizens

The Hugh Rogers Chapter serves Pisgah and Tuscola High Schools for the DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest. The DAR Good Citizens program is a wonderful way to recognize outstanding young people who exhibit the qualities of good citizenship in their homes, schools, and communities. The program is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited by their state board of education. United States citizenship is not required.

Youth Programs

Our chapter participates in the ROTC Medals program. The American History Essay Contest invites students to participate in essay writing for the 5th through the 8th grades in the public, private, and home schools.

DAR Supported Schools

Promotion of education is one of the three primary objectives of our chapter and was adopted in the original bylaws of the National Society DAR. The DAR School Committee supports DAR projects at the Tamassee DAR School and the Crossnore School. Twice a year these schools are visited and items are donated to their thrift stores which benefit the schools. We support the “Bird Cage” which takes new or gently used items for the benefit of the children and/or their families. All during the year, Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soup labels are collected and sent to both campuses to be used for purchasing necessary items.

DAR Service for Veterans

Our members are encouraged to participate in the variety of projects that aid and support veterans. This includes homeless veterans and Operation Stand Down; holidays and special events; projects for VA hospitals such as providing toiletries, lap robes, magazines, books, games, and puzzles to ill or injured veterans; projects that support women veterans; and sending thank you and holiday cards to veterans.

Historic Preservation

The Historic Preservation Committee seeks to honor the nation’s heritage, focus on the future, and celebrate America. Through its two awards, the Historic Preservation Medal and the Historic Preservation Recognition Award, it encourages recognition of significant volunteer efforts at the community, state, and national levels.

Publicity

The Publicity Committee is dedicated to informing DAR members and their communities about the historic preservation, education, and patriotic mission and activities of the DAR. This committee is responsible for the monthly chapter newsletter, the chapter website and the Facebook page, as well as contributing articles to the local newspapers, television station, and State/National Society publications.

Project Patriot

The DAR Project Patriot Committee is the official Daughters of the American Revolution committee that supports America’s service personnel in current conflicts abroad. At the national level, DAR support is focused on two groups: women serving in the military and the wounded military personnel. This program serves three facilities: the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany; Wounded Transition Brigade in Bethesda, Maryland; and Wounded Warrior and Family Support Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Individual members and chapters are encouraged to support the men and women serving in conflicts abroad in any way appropriate. Activities could range from adopting a platoon to sending care packages to relatives of chapter members, or even providing boots and books for ground troops.

Commemorative Events

The Commemorative Events Committee encourages states and chapters to celebrate the events cited by the National Society. We identify and plan local and regional commemorative events and join in celebrations that support the goals of the DAR.
