Chapter Info

The Jacob Forney Chapter of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has been an active service organization since September 14th, 1928. The thirteen charter members were direct descends of Jacob Forney, one of the pioneers in this area and a patriot in the Revolution.

Mrs. George A. Brown (Lena Forney Reinhardt) - Organizing Regent
Miss Mary Neal Roseman - Vice Regent
Miss Maude Reinhardt Mullen - Recording Secretary
Miss Katherine C. Shipp - Registrar
Mrs. S.J. Smyre - Treasurer

Other members included Mrs. A.C. Avery, Mrs. T.M. Epperson, Miss Mary Elizabeth Mullen, Mrs. J.W. Mullen, Mrs. W.L. Puckett, Miss Elizabeth Reinhardt, Miss Hettie Reinhardt, Miss Ella Forney Roseman and Miss Jennie Saine.

Mrs. A.M. Cornwell served in all of the local offices, and as State Historian, State Vice-Regent, and State Regent. On the national level she held the office of Vice President General.

The chapter has always maintained a keen interest in the local Revolutionary battle which took place at Ramsour's Mill on June 20, 1780. This was a significant victory for the Whigs against the more numerous Tories. It dampened Tory sentiment in the area, affecting the outcome of the Battle of Kings Mountain which followed in October. For the 150th anniversary of the battle a large boulder, known as Lord Tarleton's Tea Table, was moved to the lawn of the Lincoln County Courthouse and a bronze market placed on it to commemorate the Whig victory. Before the 175th anniversary the chapter restored the old and deteriorated brick tomb of the Whig captains who gave their lives in that battle. A bronze market designating the tomb was dedicated in 1995 by the Jacob Forney Chapter. We continue to preserve and promote the memory of that significant battle.

In September we observe Constitution Week by participating in "Bells Across America," and a patriotic program.

Our November meeting recognizes the DAR Good Citizens. We recognize one outstanding senior in each Lincoln County high school as the DAR Good Citizen. They are invited to attend the meeting along with their parents and student advisors. The presentation of the Good Citizen Medal is an impressive ceremony. We receive good coverage by our local newspaper.

In December we celebrate with a festive dinner with husbands as special guests. Music of the season enhances our fellowship.

In February of each year we encourage an interest in history. The chapter sponsors an essay contest in the middle grades. Certificates are awarded to all of the entrants and a bronze medal to the winner in each school. We have been pleased that several of our winners have also been
district and state winners.

We observe Constitution Week, American History Month, and participate in other worthwhile projects. We are happy to contribute to Crossnore School and the Veteran's Hospitals with donations each year. The objectives of the Jacob Forney Chapter remain the same as the National Society---historic preservation, education and patriotism.

Organized in 1928, during the State Regency of Mrs. Charles R. Whitaker. We have remained an active chapter for 78 years. Currently our membership is 56.
