Farmville, NC - Home of the Dogwood Festival
|
|
Farmville is located in Pitt County near Greenville, NC. A local area of historical interest is the May Museum and Farmville Heritage Center. The Center also now serves as the office of the Farmville Downtown Partnership. The last descendant of Major Benjamin May to live in the Center's 19th century house, Tabitha Marie DeVisconti, donated her home, property and many artifacts to the town of Farmville and following renovations, the facility was opened in 1991 as the May Museum and Farmville Heritage Center. James William May built the home circa 1870. His grandfather, Major Benjamin May, settled the area south of Black Swamp in the colonial period and he became a very active and influential figure in the social, political, and military affairs of Pitt County. |

- Major Benjamin May Chapter members have served DAR, their community, and their nation for over 80 years, seeking to fulfill the organization's mission: to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism.
- Major Benjamin May Daughters proudly participate in community activities by sponsoring patriotic essay contests and a Good Citizen contest in local schools. We sponsor the
Dr. Robert Williams Society CAR.
- Our Daughters are proud of the various military training programs and we award ROTC medals to the East Carolina University Army and Air Force units.
- We participate in festivals, parades, and celebrations in the town and country and have earned the coveted "Grateful Nation" flag. We've donated an exhibit of military uniforms to the local May Museum.
- Major Benjamin May Chapter has erected monuments to Aaron Tyson, Indian fighter, to Cornelius Tyson, Colonial and Revolutionary Patriot, and to Major May.
- Our chapter projects include maintaining our beautiful Georgian style chapter house constructed in the 1930s. We proudly seek to preserve it by finding ways to support it both financially and physically. We rent it for a reasonable fee for weddings, receptions, meetings, etc., and at a reduced rate for members and cultural events.
- We welcomed five Junior members last year and invite you to view our Chapter History and Membership pages at the links above.
