Gastonia, located in the heart of the Piedmont section of North Carolina,  was incorporated in 1877 and became the county seat of Gaston County in 1911. It is approximately 22 miles west of Charlotte and is the second largest city in the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. With its population of about 64,000 it is the twelfth largest city in the state.
It began as a railroad junction between Charlotte and Atlanta Airline Railroad (now Southern Railway) and the Chester and Lenoir Narrow Gauge line.  Once mainly agricultural,  Gaston County evolved into an important center of textile production for the world.  Over the years that has declined and Gastonia now has a diverse commercial and industrial base. Gastonia is home to the Schiele Museum of Natural History and James Lynn Planetarium, the American Military Museum of Gastonia,  the Gaston Country Club,  the City Club of Gastonia, and the Main Branch of the Gaston County Public Library.
Historical marker located on Catawba Street, Belmont, North Carolina.
