Chapter Meetings

The chapter meets the second Thursday morning of each month (except during the summer) for a short business meeting and program.  We are a varied group of retirees, career women, and full-time mothers who have Revolutionary War Patriot ancestors and are proud of our heritage.

Organization

The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence Chapter, NSDAR, was organized in Charlotte on the 22nd of February, 1912, with thirty-five charter members.  The name was chosen in commemoration of the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence at Charlotte on May 20, 1775.

Chapter Name
The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence preceded the National Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by more than a year.  The original copy of the Mecklenburg Declaration was in the possession of John McKnitt Alexander, Secretary of the Convention, until April 1800 when Alexander's home, Alexandriana  (near Huntersville), and the original copy of the declaration were destroyed by fire.  The current copy of the declaration was composed from memory by Alexander after the fire.

History
Because the original document was destroyed, the Mecklenburg Declaration is one of the nation's most controversial documents; however, the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence has been accepted in Mecklenburg County and North Carolina.  The State Convention of 1861 had placed the date, May 20, 1775, on the state flag and seal in honor of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. It is without a doubt a cornerstone of the fierce pride in Mecklenburg County in independence and patriotism.
