The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence preceded the National Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776, by more than a year. The original copy of the Mecklenburg Declaration was in possession of John McKnitt Alexander,  Secretary of the Convention, until April 1800 when Alexander's home and the original copy of the declaration were destroyed by fire.  The current copy of the declaration was composed from memory by Alexander after the fire.
The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on 22nd of February, 1912, with 35 charter members.   The name was chosen in commemoration of the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence at Charlotte on May 20, 1775.

SUBJECT:
Because the original document was destroyed, the Mecklenburg Declaration is one of the nation's most controversial documents, however, the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence has been accepted in Mecklenburg County and North Carolina.  The State Convention of 1861 had placed the date, May 20, 1775, on its state flag and seal in honor of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.  It is without a doubt a cornerstone of the fierce pride in Mecklenburg County in independence and patriotism.
Any woman is eligible for membership who is no less than eighteen years of age and can prove lineal, blood line descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. She must provide documentation for each statement of birth, marriage, and death.

Admission to membership in the NSDAR is either by invitation through a Chapter in your State Organization
(or Unit Overseas). No Chapter may discriminate against an applicant on the basis of race or creed.
