The Neuse River has a long and honorable history, having seen its share of war and peace, from Indian tomahawks to federal mortars.  Its marshes have caught the life-blood of the earliest settlers.
This river is either serene or violent-jumping from one extreme to the other, and given to sudden destructive display of temper.
The Neuse River rises in the hilly Piedmont section of North Carolina, at the confluence of the Eno and Flat Rivers.  Fed by numerous streams, it flows approximately 180 miles through fertile fields and thriving towns, finally merging into the Pamlico Sound, and thence into the Atlantic Ocean.
However, punctuated with swamps and marshes, the Neuse River has always been a beneficent waterway system.  It has provided transportation and travel, a veritable lifeline for the early settlers.
