The Quaker Meadows Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was organized June 9, 1972. The chapter was named for the oldest European settlement in Burke County located just west of the Catawba River from Morganton. The property was the home of Charles McDowell, the elder, and his son, Colonel Joseph McDowell, hero of the Battle of King's Mountain. Officers and men of the militia gathered for a conference under a great tree at the site before marching on to the battle at King's Mountain.
Early in its history, the chapter began to sponsor the American History Essay Contest for grades
5-8 and there have been district winners and state winners.
Each fall the four local high schools are asked to nominate a senior to receive the DAR Good Citizen Award and to participate in the scholarship essay contest. In the spring, a deserving, graduating JROTC cadet from each school is awarded a medal and certificate at spring convocation.
The chapter supports DAR-approved Crossnore School in Crossnore, N.C., with items for its thrift shop, such as clothing and costume jewelry as well as Campbell Soup labels and money. The chapter also supports Tamassee DAR School in Tamassee, S.C., in similar ways.
Over the years, veterans have been supported in various ways by the chapter sending Christmas gifts and money to Oteen Veterans Hospital.
