Wilmington, founded in 1639, abounds with historical sites and markers--testimony to its place in the history of our State.
     General Cornwallis stayed here on his way from the Battle of Guilford Courthouse to Yorktown, where he surrendered. The Burgwin-Wright House, which you can tour today, is located at the corner of Third and Market streets. For many years it was called the Cornwallis House.
     George Washington stopped in Wilmington while on his Southern Tour in 1791. Stamp Defiance Chapter placed a marker under the oak tree where the Wilmington Light Horse Dragoons of the local militia met him near present day Hampstead in Pender County and escorted him into town. There was a gala ball in his honor, bonfires were lit in the streets, and the ships hung out all their lights and flags.

     Downtown Wilmington offers families a paddle boat river cruise over to the USS Battleship NC and a walking tour, a ghost tour, and a horse-drawn carriage ride through the historic district.
