CHAPTER: The Virginia Dare Chapter of Kill Devil Hills, NC, hosted its official Organizing Meeting on Saturday, March 28, 1998, at the Elizabethan Gardens complex on Roanoke Island with 25 members. Our chapter was named after Virginia Dare, who was born August 18, 1587 on Roanoke Island. She was the first child of English parents born in America. Her parents Ananias Dare and his wife Eleanor, the daughter of Governor John White, gave her the name Virginia, the name given to the new country by the Queen. Virginia was baptized the following Sunday on August 24. This scant record is all the definite knowledge we have of the most famous baby in American history. |
| "......and down the centuries that lie
ahead there'll be some whisper of our name......" John Borden's words to Eleanor Dare in the play "The Lost Colony" |

TOWN: Kill Devil Hills is located in Dare County, North Carolina, and is one of many small towns along a narrow strip of land known as the Outer Banks. It is recognized as the birthplace of aviation. Orville and Wilbur Wright designed, built and flew the first airplane off a small hill in Kitty Hawk, NC, on December 7, 1903. |
| This historical flight took place in what was then known as Kitty Hawk but is now in the town of Kill Devil Hills. |
| There is a huge monument dedicated to Orville and Wilbur Wright that now sits on top of the hill. This area will be the site of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of flight to be held |
| December 7, 2003. Among many points of interest in Dare County are "The Lost Colony" play presented each summer on Roanoke Island in the town of Manteo, which depicts the lives of the settlers and the birth of Virginia Dare in 1587 and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which received international fame when it was moved a half mile inland to prevent its destruction from the ever encroaching Atlantic Ocean. |
