For more than a century, the members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution have dedicated themselves to historical preservation, promotion of education, and encouragement of patriotic endeavor. These goals are as relevant in today’s society as they were when the organization was founded in 1890.

Activities

The primary focus of our chapter activities is the support of the National Society’s mission to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Below is a list of ongoing activities in each of these categories.

Historic Preservation

  • Our chapter offers genealogy workshops for prospective members.
  • Chapter members continue to research service and lineage of American Revolutionary War Patriots.
  • Chapter members donate hours indexing and categorizing historic records.
  • The chapter has marked graves of American Revolutionary War soldiers and continues to research and locate graves of local Patriots who served in the American Revolutionary War.
  • The members participate in local commemorative events by presenting our wreath at special ceremonies for the Battle of Kings Mountain, the Battle of Cowan’s Ford, and Cowpens.
  • We honor an American Revolutionary War Patriot at each chapter meeting.
  • Chapter members participate in the Wreaths Across America program by laying wreaths on graves of American soldiers from all wars.

Education

  • The chapter provides a Constitution Week display at local libraries and nursing homes for the week of September 17.
  • We sponsor candidates for the DAR American History Essay Contest at local middle schools, as well as candidates for the DAR Christopher Columbus Essay Contest at local high schools.
  • We sponsor the DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest at local high schools. This award recognizes and rewards a high school senior who displays the good citizenship qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.
  • Our chapter awards the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) medal to an outstanding cadet at each of our participating high schools.
  • We encourage applications to a variety of scholarships through the NSDAR Scholarships and the NCSDAR Scholarships by supplying information to the local high schools.
  • We encourage students in grades K-12 to enter the Junior American Citizens contest to express their patriotism.
  • We support Crossnore School and Children’s Home with donations of requested items.
  • We present American history programs at many of our meetings.

Patriotism

  • Our members provide requested items to the Chaplain’s Closet at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, where wounded service personnel receive treatment.
  • We donate funds to the local USO for purchase of snacks and supplies for soldiers.
  • Chapter members write and send greeting cards to active duty service personnel.
  • We regularly collect and send manufacturer’s coupons to various troops overseas.
  • The chapter contributes funds to “Operation: Bean of Life,” a coffee house opened by the Army Chaplain located on a base in the Middle East.
  • Chapter members donate gift cards, personal care items, and clothing to the veterans at the W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury, North Carolina.
  • Chapter members march and hand out flags at local holiday celebrations.
