History

Our chapter

The Joseph McDowell Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on October 26, 1916, by fourteen patriotic women whose ancestors were active in the American War for Independence who gathered at the Hendersonville home of sisters Catherine and Matilda Carson. The women met for the purpose of organizing a chapter of the NSDAR in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Ella Davidson Morrison, North Carolina State Regent, Grace Jones, North Carolina State Recording Secretary, and “Quaker Meadows Joe“ McDowell, a descendant of Joseph McDowell, were present. The meeting was called to order, and after prayer, the State Regent pronounced the chapter organized. The official date was November 16, 1916.

The chapter was named “Joseph McDowell“ after Revolutionary War Colonel Joseph McDowell (1758-1795) of Pleasant Gardens in current–day McDowell County. He was a member of the Overmountain Men and an American Revolutionary War hero who fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Colonel McDowell also served in the 3rd U.S. Congress of 1793-95. McDowell County is named in his honor.
