Projects and Activities

Our Guilford Battle Chapter, NSDAR, members are involved in a wide range of projects and activities that are related to our three goals of historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Our members are encouraged to use their special gifts and talents to support our chapter, our community, and our nation. Some examples of recent activities and projects are:

Historic Preservation

  • Researching, writing, and publishing the Battle Participants at Guilford Courthouse book
  • Cleaning, preserving, and marking graves of Patriots and others
  • Participating in battle reenactments at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park and other locations
  • Co-hosting the annual General Nathanael Greene Birthday Celebration
  • Researching, creating, and displaying authentic colonial attire
  • Portraying local colonial era people
  • Providing presentations about Battle of Guilford Courthouse, the Constitution, Women’s Suffrage, and other historical topics
  • Volunteering at local museums
  • Assisting community members, other DAR chapters, and Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) chapters with genealogical research
  • Interviewing elderly community members to preserve local history
  • Serving on Guilford Battleground Company Board
  • Donating historical items to Guilford Courthouse National Military Park

Education

  • Purchasing books and creating thirteen classroom libraries at Crossnore Children’s Home in Winston Salem, North Carolina
  • Providing presentations at local schools and organizations about historical topics
  • Volunteering at local elementary schools
  • Volunteering as adult literacy instructor and adult literacy tutors
  • Volunteering with local cultural organizations
  • Funding annual Guilford Battle Chapter NSDAR Scholarship for a graduating high school senior
  • Sponsoring DAR Good Citizens and Scholarship Contest in local high schools
  • Sponsoring a chapter seed exchange

Patriotism

Veterans are honored at a Christmas luncheon sponsored
by the chapter.
  • Hosting annual veterans Christmas luncheon
  • Honoring local ROTC graduates with certificates, medals, and awards
  • Writing letters and notes to active duty military personnel
  • Participating in Wreaths Across America by purchasing and laying wreaths on veterans’ graves
  • Attending naturalization ceremonies and distributing flags and literature to new citizens
  • Distributing American flags at community events
  • Participating in local parades and festivals
  • Writing poetry to honor the American Revolution and Patriots
  • Ringing Freedom Bells on Constitution Day
  • Participating in Veterans Day and Memorial Day Ceremonies
  • Sewing quilts to cover service members and veterans through the Quilts of Valor

Our members participate in many other community volunteer activities such as playing the piano at local nursing homes, volunteering in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, serving on a private school board, providing snacks for community first responders, completing art projects, and volunteering at local churches.
