American History Essay Contest

This contest is for students in grades 5-8 and includes public, private, parochial and home-schooled students. Essays are judged for historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of material, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness. Essays are due to our chapter by November 1. Awards are presented the following February. Interested students should see their teachers, guidance counselors, or contact us for more information.

Mildred H. Showfety History Award

Established in 1987 to honor Mildred Showfety, former John Hoyle Chapter Regent, State Regent, and Vice President General — this award is given in April to an outstanding student of American History at Hickory High School.

Good Citizenship Medal

This award is for students in grades 5-11 and includes public, private, parochial, and home-schooled students. The Good Citizenship Medal is presented to girls or boys who fulfill the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism. The medal may also be awarded to youth service and patriotic organizations. Interested students should see their teachers, guidance counselors, or contact us for more information.

Good Citizens Award

This award is for students in grade 12. The high school faculty selects three seniors who best demonstrate the qualities of a good citizen in their homes, schools, and communities. The senior class then votes for the one senior student to be the DAR Good Citizen candidate for that school year. Awards are presented in October. The winner is eligible for a scholarship by completing an application and writing an essay about how he/she has incorporated dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism into their life.

Junior American Citizens Contest

This award is for students in grades 1-12 and is a contest in art (banner, stamp design, poster, and photo essay), creative expression (poetry and short story), and community service. These contests are judged at each grade level. A new theme is selected each year and the purpose is to engage youth by teaching loyalty to the United States — encouraging a deeper sense of social responsibility and increasing interest in social studies. Interested students should see their teachers, guidance counselors, or contact us for more information.

JROTC and ROTC Medals

These medals are awarded to student cadets of outstanding ability and achievement in high school, junior college, or university ROTC programs. Winners must be in the top 25% of their classes and show qualities of dependability, good character, discipline, patriotism, and leadership ability. Selection is made by heads of the educational facility.

DAR Medal of Honor

The DAR Medal of Honor is given to an adult man or woman who is a United States citizen by birth and has shown extraordinary qualities of leadership, trustworthiness, service, and patriotism.

Community Service Awards

These recognize worthy residents from a variety of walks of life for unpaid voluntary achievements in cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic, historical, and citizenship endeavors, or in environmental conservation.

Conservation Medal
