Activities

The Otway Burns Chapter, NSDAR, members are involved in a wide range of projects and activities that are related to our goals of historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Our members use their talents to help support our chapter, our community, and our nation. Some examples of recent activities and projects are:

Historic preservation

  • Assisting community members with genealogical research
  • Indexing DAR genealogical and supporting documentation
  • Helping to fund monuments commemorating important places and events in American history

Education

  • Sponsoring the local DAR Good Citizen program
  • Providing school groups and after-school programs with funding and volunteers
  • Supporting the DAR Schools
  • Promoting education and citizenship through youth programs such as the Salt Works Society, Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.), and DAR Junior American Citizens
  • Sponsoring American history essay contests for youth in grades five through eight

Patriotism

  • Volunteering in the community
  • Participating in local parades and festivals
  • Participating in Wreaths Across America by purchasing and laying wreaths on veterans' graves
  • Offering support to America's service personnel in current conflicts abroad
  • Sponsoring special programs promoting the Constitution during its official celebration week
  • Participating in naturalization ceremonies
  • Presenting patriotic awards to deserving individuals including DAR Good Citizens awards and ROTC medals awards
  • Presenting Constitution Week programs in elementary schools

Otway Burns Chapter, NSDAR, members support our community in many ways. We volunteer and support The Hem of His Garment, Backpack Friends, and the North Carolina Aquarium located at Pine Knoll Shores. We serve as docents for Fort Macon in Carteret County and volunteer with prison ministries. Our members volunteer in school classrooms throughout Onslow and Carteret counties. These are just a few of the ways that we support our community.
