Chapter History

The organizational meeting of the James Hunter Chapter, NSDAR, was a luncheon held Thursday, June 4, 1953, at Grogan’s dining room with 19 members from Madison, Mayodan, and Stoneville; towns of Western Rockingham County and Rural Stokes County. State Regent Lillian Long Kernodle of Burlington and North Carolina Organizing Chairman Frances Catherine McAulay Rankin of Mt. Gilead presided at the meeting. Susie Johnson Lauten was chosen to be the organizing regent and she appointed the officers. The chapter’s name was chosen in honor of Major James Hunter, Revolutionary War soldier and Patriot, whose home had been in the area.

The first regular meeting was scheduled for the second Saturday of September of that year. The chapter finished its first year with 27 members. The first year, these ladies were very involved in DAR activities such as the DAR Good Citizens Essay Contest and the American History Essay Contest. They hosted meetings in their homes. We continue to be a very active chapter, which follows the motto of God, Home and Country.
